Christmas lights

Christmas lights Enjoy a special Christmas market, fairground rides and family entertainment on Sun 18 Nov from 12 noon, with the St Albans Christmas lights switch-on at 5.30pm. In Harpenden, expect things to brighten up on Sun 25 Nov from 12 noon when lights go on as part of the Christmas Carnival.

Early bird shoppers can take advantage of the many Christmas fairs coming this month:

• St Albans Town Hall Bookfair (daily, to 2 Jan)

• Hatfield House Christmas Market (10 Nov, 10.30am-4pm).

• Jubilee Centre Christmas Fair (17 Nov, 10am-4pm)

• Knebworth House Fair (16 to 18 Nov, 10am-4pm, £3-£5).

• Noke Thistle Gift Fair in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support (21 Nov, from 9.30am, £2).

• Burston Festive Event (22 Nov, 2-7pm, free).

• Hatfield House Frost Fair (23-25 Nov, 10am-5pm, adults £4).

• Harpenden Public Halls Gift Fair, 23 & 24 Nov 10am-4pm

• St Stephen's Church Fair (24 Nov, 11am-2pm).

 
Firework displays

Firework displays

As always, there's plenty of choice for going out with a bang. On Sat 3 Nov, Verulamium Park hosts the St Albans Fireworks Spectacular (gates 6pm, display 7.30pm). There are also displays at Cassiobury Park, OA's Rugby Club, Jersey Farm and Redbourn Common. On Sun 4 Nov, Butterfly World offers free parking, food & drink stalls and more (gates 5pm, display 6.30pm, buy tickets). You can also see the sky light up at  Harpenden Rugby Club.
